Traditional Japanese Lanterns '灯籠', pronounced "Tourou"
Lanterns were originally introduced into Japan from mainland China.
Though originally metallic, they came to become more popular for their stone construction and shape.
After the explosive growth of the Japanese tea ceremony (Tea also coming from China) the stone garden ornament and lantern came into it's own in Japan.

The four categories being:
Tachi-gata (pedestal lanterns, tachi meaning to stand)
Ikekomi-gata (buried style)
Oki-gata (small, set style)
Yukimi-gata (snow surrounding or viewing style)

Kyoto made 'Kasuga'
The Kasuga lantern is a classic example of a Japanese "tachi-gata" or a pedestal style lantern.
This style dates back to the Ashikaga period.
It was traditionally used as a "guardian" lantern at Japanese Buddhist temples and may frequently be seen in Japanese tea gardens entrances.
It is commonly used as a centerpiece and the stone carvings on the light box indicate to its origin.
